Things to Know about Amelia Island

Amelia Island, also known as "The Isle of Eight Flags" is an island officially in the city of Fernandina Beach, Florida. The island is the only place in America where eight different flags have flown (French: 1562-1564, Spanish: 1565-1763 and 1783-1821, British: 1763-1783, Patriots: 1812, Green Cross: 1817, Mexican Revolutionary: 1817, National Flag of the Confederacy: 1861-1862, and United States: 1862-Present).


The island is 13 miles long and approximately 4 miles wide at its widest point. On Centre Street, you will find historical Downtown Fernandina Beach with shopping, restaurants, and the island's marina. Also on Centre Street, you can find landmark buildings, including the Nassau County Courthouse (c. 1891), the old post office (c. 1912), the old train depot (c. 1899), and Florida's oldest bar, the Palace Saloon (c. 1903).


Also on Amelia Island are Florida's oldest existing lighthouse (Amelia Island Lighthouse, c. 1838) and the state's oldest hotel (Florida House Inn, c. 1857).

TEMPERATURES

Daily temperatures on Amelia Island typically range from 46°F to 91°F. Our summer temperature average a daily high of 86°F with the hottest days usually in July. Our winter temperatures typically average a daily high of 70°F or below. (We actually have the lowest daytime summer temperatures in the entire state of Florida.)

The average water temperature also varies greatly throughout the course of the year. The ocean water is at its warmest from June through September with temperatures averaging 79°F to 83°F. The ocean water is at its coolest from mid-December to early April with temperatures averaging 63°F to 67°F.
